QUETTA: The land and atmosphere of Balochistan are not congenial socially, economically and politically for the Taliban to operate in Balochistan.

Addressing a press conference at the FC headquarters here on Wednesday, Inspector General, Frontier Corps, Balochistan, Major General Salim Nawaz said the people of northern Balochistan would not tolerate Fata-like activities of the Taliban in their areas because such activities could harm their businesses. Moreover, political parties, which have influence in the area, have been raising their voice against militancy and would also oppose Fata-like operations of the Taliban.

Admitting the presence of religious seminaries in a large number in northern Balochistan, the IG added that almost all of these seminaries were disseminating religious education. “People’s reaction to any drone attack in Balochistan would be extremely strong,” he said. Replying to a question, the IG said he was sure that the abductors had not smuggled UNHCR Balochistan chief John Solecki to any neighbouring country. He said the FC and other law-enforcement agencies had been avoiding any operation against the kidnappers for fear about the captive’s life. “The US embassy, UN bodies, the federal government and the provincial government are in contact with the kidnappers. I hope they would realise their blunder and release John Solecki without harming him.”

He opined: “Mangochar, Ahmadwall and Dalbandin are the areas where the captive might be kept and that is why these areas are being closely monitored.” Moreover, the FC at the Pak Afghan border had been checking almost every vehicle thoroughly. DIG FC Brigadier Sikandar and other senior officials were present on the occasion.
