He gave this direction on Wednesday on reports of wide-scale deforestation in different parts of the country. In a letter addressed to the governors, he asked them to devise a plan for massive reforestation in the country. In the letter that was addressed to provincial governors as well as relevant ministries, the president said he was deeply concerned over the reports of increasing deforestation by timber mafia and allotment of forestlands for non-forest uses. In his letter, the president held that during a year that has been declared the ‘Year of Environment’ deforestation reports are very disturbing and point to the need for urgent and effective measures to arrest deforestation in the country on the one hand and launch a robust programme of forestation on the other, the letter said. The forests play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance and clean environment. They also cause rainfall and must be protected at all costs, the president said. The president said that water was increasingly becoming a scarce commodity posing a serious developmental challenge, which could be met to a great extent by increasing the forest land and growing more trees. He said that the ratio of the forests to the available land in Pakistan is already one of the lowest in the world and wanton destruction of this national wealth would play havoc with environment as well as ecological balance finally affecting the country’s economy. |
