After leading 1-0 at half-time, the Germans enjoyed a goal-fest in the second session as they pumped in five more to take the pole position in the three-day quadrangular event in cold, wet and windy conditions.

Pakistan could have won the title by beating the Germans but they were relegated to the third position behind runners-up Malaysia and ahead of Belgium, who took the wooden spoon.

But in spite of a poor finish in the tournament, Pakistani hockey officials were satisfied with the overall outcome of the Hamburg outing that came almost five weeks after the three-time Olympic champions finished an embarrassing eighth position in the Beijing Games.

“The main objective behind our decision to field the Pakistan team in the Hamburg Masters was to give several newcomers vital international exposure,” Asif Bajwa, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) secretary, told ‘The News’ in a telephonic conversation from Hamburg on Sunday night.

“Our team may have lost by a huge margin against Germany, but the bottom line is that the team’s youngsters learnt some vital lessons and gained a lot of experience from this tournament,” added the former Pakistan player and national coach.

Bajwa and Pakistan team officials were impressed by the performance of several younger players in Hamburg.

The PHF secretary said that youngsters like Kashif Ali, M Fareed, striker Haseem Khan, Shafqat Rasool and Mohammad Zubair sparkled during the best part of the tournament.

“The Hamburg Masters turned out to be a good platform for these youngsters to prove their worth,” he stressed. “Some of them passed the test with flying colours.”

Bajwa said that several other players were a bit disappointing in the four-nation event that was played in freezing conditions.

“We are not happy with the way some of the players performed here. The coaches will have to work hard on them in the coming months.”

Pakistan got off to a splendid start in Hamburg when they thrashed Belgium 6-3. But the young side was unable to keep up the momentum and was held 2-2 by Malaysia on Saturday.

Against Germany, Pakistan were let down by their erratic forwards in the first session that ended with the hosts leading 1-0.

In the second half, defenders Mohammad Imran and Fareed had to leave the field because of injuries and their younger replacements were unable to keep the German attack at bay. Most of the German goals came off short corner drills.

Pakistan captain Shakeel Abbasi scored the consolation goal for his team. The Pakistani squad will fly out of Hamburg today (Monday) and reach home on Tuesday.
