They, however, were edged out (14-16) in fourth round against Sabres, who had been beaten in all their previous three games. KARACHI: The battle between the top eight outfits got off to a cracking start in the National Bridge Championship that got underway here at the Aslam Bridge Hall, housed in the National Stadium, on Friday. Holders LUMS, featuring Noman Butt, Zia Hyder Naqi, Ahsan Qureshi, Anisur Rehman and Shahab Sarki overpowered Sherdils 17-13 before outpacing Sabre 23-7. They were narrowly beaten in their next two games by Mazhar and Giants. The star-studded Data Steel, having the services of Rashid-ul-Ghazi, Tehsin Gheewala, Tariq Rasheed Khan, Pervaiz Mirza, Javed Miran and Tahir Masood, also won their first couple of games against Sabres and Giants before losing Mazhar and Allana. Sherdils, having Saeed Peerzada, Shahnaz Peerzada, Shakeel Chandna, Wajahat Suri and Abdul Khaliq, faced defeat in their first couple of games against LUMS and Candyland. They came back in the reckoning with a comprehensive 25-5 win over Sabres in the third round before getting jolted by Mazhar in the next match. Allana, comprising of having Jane Alam Fazli, Abdul Rehman Allana, Khurshid Hadi, Kemal Shoaib, Imran Jhaka and Rashid Jafer, also met with mixed fortunes as did Mazhar, having fielded Mazhar Ali Khan, Shoaib Khan, Dr. Sarfraz Ahmed, A K Bhurgri, Anwar Kizilbash. |
