ImageCAPE TOWN: Pakistan cut down a courageous Bangladesh Challenge beating them by four wickets to warp up their super eight stage of the Twenty-20 World Cricket cup tournament with a hat trick of victories here on Thursday at Newlands stadium.

Pakistan, already ensured a place in the semi finals, elected to field after winning the toss, chasing a modest 141 runs target reached home safely with the loss of six wickets and one over reaming before repairing a slight middle order collapse. Pakistan had earlier beaten Sri Lanka by 33 runs and Australia by six wickets.

Pakistan got a solid opening start of 59 runs in which three players were involved as Shahid Afridi was sent with Imran Nazir to open the innings. Imran was retired hurt and Afridi (39 off 15 balls) and Muhammad Haffez (23 with four fours in 21 balls) shared the stand. Imran struck between the legs at (0) left the crease off the bowling Mashrafe Mortaza when Pak innings was just three balls old.

To scorer Afirdi set the tone hammering five fours in a short lived innings and fell victim to pacer Syed Rasel caught by Mushfiqur Rahim. As soon as the partnership was broken Pakistani batting plunged into trouble with inform batsman Misbah ul Haq and Younis Khan, another reliable batsman shareing one run apiece.

Once again it was left to captain Shoaib Malik to accomplish the target and he made (21) off 20 ball striking two fours lbw by Mahmudullah. Imran who returned to the crease took the side to success, first time making any notable contribution, (27) in 18 balls hitting 3 fours with Kamran Akmal notout at 3.

Earlier Little known Junaid Siddique playing his first match of the tournament showed a awesome performance with superb 71 as Bangladesh were all out at 140 in 20. The stylish opener gave a good account of himself but failed to muster support from fellow colleagues.

19 year old Junaid who made just (2) got a fresh lease of life when he pulled off Muhammad Asif but Misbah ul Haq failed to catch over his head. Pakistani bowlers failed to show tidy bowling and gave away plenty of wides and no balls, even Asif was seen bowling at a low pace and most of the players were in a relaxed mood.

Junaid displayed stroke play with variety of shots, extending maximum punishment to both new ball bowlers, Asif and Sohail Tanveer and even Pakistan’s most successful all rounder Shahid Afridi, one of the most effective bowlers in the competition, even failed to make any impression and conceded a number of boundaries.

Man of the match, Junaid reached 50 off 35 balls and on the other end Aftab Ahmed (15) getting useful singles as Bangladesh set the flow of round and looked in hunt of a imposing total.

Junaid, the saviour of Bangladesh put on 63 runs for the second wicket with Aftab as six of their batsmen including Tamim Iqbal (3), Muhammad Ashraful (5), Shakib Al Hasan (1) Mahmudullah run out (1), Abdur Razzak runout (0) and Syed Rasel (1) failed to show application and courage.

After somehow unsuccessful bowling by pacers, Pakistan spinners made some impression to put Bangladesh under pressure by getting a major break through breaking the partnership when Tamim Iqbal was superbly run out by Mohammad Hafeez running in from point.

As Bangladesh lost frequent wickets from the other end, their lone shining star amid clouds Junaid kept on hitting big shots and six six fours and three towering sixes. Pakistan took a sight of relief with the dismissal of Junaid caught by Misbah off Shoaib and it was left to the tail to make progress which did not happen. As Bangladesh lost the thread and failed to cope with the spinners. Shoaib finished with two for 15 runs in just two overs and off spinner Hafeez took two wickets for 27 in 3 overs as pacers Asif, and Umer Gul contended with one wicket mopping up the tail.

The match between South Africa and India will decide whom Pakistan will play in the semi finals. New Zealand are also in contention and from the three teams it will be decided on better run rate.
