KARACHI: Controversial pacer Shoaib Akhtar returned to Pakistan duty on Tuesday when he was named in a 15-man squad for a four-nation twenty20 tournament getting underway in Toronto from Friday. But senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf’s ambition to regain his place in the Pakistan twenty20 squad was shattered after the Canadian Embassy didn’t issue him a visa on Tuesday. All-rounder Yasir Arafat also failed to get a visa. “We have announced a perfectly balanced team that is a combination of both youth and experience,” chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed told ‘The News’. “We are expecting it to do well in Canada,” he added. Pakistan are to feature in the Toronto quadrangular alongside Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and hosts Canada from October 10-13. It will be Pakistan’s first international assignment since this summer’s Asia Cup on home soil. Having spent almost ten months in international wilderness, Shoaib returns to the Pakistan squad after proving his matches in a series of game for Islamabad Leopards in the ongoing National Twenty20 Cup in Lahore. He last played for Pakistan in the Bangalore Test against India last December. In spite of the fact that he bowled his overs without breaking down, Shoaib’s return is a bit surprising as he is yet to pay up a fine of Rs7 million imposed on him over repeated breaches of discipline. It seems that the PCB has softened its stance over the fine issue though a senior Board official said that the player will have to pay up the fine at a later stage. “The matter is in the court and there is going to be a hearing tomorrow. Let’s see what happens,” said Mansoor Suhail, PCB’s media chief. While Shoaib must be celebrating a stunning return considering the fact that he was banned for five years this April, Yousuf was left seething after being left out of the twenty20 squad once again. The Lahore-batsman almost joined the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) in protest last year after being overlooked for the inaugural World Twenty20 Championship in South Africa. Yousuf is desperate to prove his worth in the shortest version of the game but the visa problem ended his hopes of doing that in Toronto. All in all, Pakistan have named a competent squad which has a number of players, who are knocking at the doors of Test cricket. Rookie Karachi pacer Anwar Ali was rewarded for his excellent performance on the recently-concluded African Safari with the Pakistan Academy team. Opener Shoaib Khan, the other uncapped player in the list, made the cut for Toronto spectacle following a prolific run on the domestic circuit. In spite of reports that Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and coach Geoff Lawson were against the inclusion of Shahid Afridi, the senior all-rounder retained his place in the squad. Afridi, has had a poor run with the bat in the Asia Cup, but has done well in the ongoing T20 Cup by leading Karachi Dolphins in the final of the contest. Pakistan are scheduled to leave for Toronto late on Wednesday night. Pakistan squad: Shoaib Malik (captain), Salman Butt, Shoaib Khan, Khalid Latif, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul Haq, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal (wicket-keeper), Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Fawad Alam, Anwar Ali, Sohail Khan, Abdur Rauf. |
