src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"> Pro-rebel website www.tamilnet.com said Tigers had thrown up stiff resistance in southern Kilinochchi district on Tuesday, which killed at least 62 soldiers and injured 49 others. “The SLA offensive units were pushed back in all three fronts,” the website said, quoting unnamed Tiger officials. The military denied the rebel statement and said only six soldiers were wounded from fighting in the area. There was no independent confirmation of the casualties, because the government generally does not let media into the war zone and both sides distort the figures to their benefit. President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government is confident of finishing the ground war soon, having poured money and manpower at it since formally trashing an often-ignored ceasefire inJanuary. The Tigers since 1983 have waged war to create a homeland for Sri Lanka’s minority Tamil people, and in doing so landed on US, EU and Indian terrorism lists for widespread bombings and assassinations of rivals, including Tamils. Meanwhile, scattered battles between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels across Sri Lanka’s embattled north have killed 20 guerrillas, the military said Wednesday. The clashes broke out on Tuesday along the front lines separating government-controlled territory and the de facto rebel state, the military said in a statement. The worst fighting was near the rebel administrative capital of Kilinochchi, where 12 insurgents were killed in three separate clashes, it said. Six soldiers were wounded in those battles, it said. Fighting in Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Jaffna killed eight rebels and wounded four soldiers, the statement said. On Wednesday, air force helicopters bombed three locations identified as gathering spots for the rebels in the Mullaitivu district, the military said in a separate statement. Pilots confirmed the raids were successful, the statement said, without giving casualty details. With nearly all communications to the north severed, rebel spokesmen could not be contacted for comment. |
